Mattias Gardell: Swedish scholar of comparative religion. Read more

Hans Bertil Mattias Gardell (born 10 August 1959) is a Swedish scholar of comparative religion. He is the current holder of the Nathan Söderblom Chair of Comparative Religion at Uppsala University, Sweden.

Mattias Gardell was born in Solna, Stockholm County, Sweden. He earned a Ph.D. in the history of religions at Stockholm University in 1995 and became a docent in 1999. He has been working at the Department of Comparative Religion and the Centre for Research in International Migration and Ethnic Relations at Stockholm University. He has also lived and studied in Cairo, Egypt. In March 2006 he was appointed the first holder (from 1 July 2006) of the Nathan Söderblom Chair of Comparative Religion at Uppsala University.[1]

Gardell specializes in the study of religious extremism and religious racism in the United States, studying groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, Nation of Islam, and folkish movements in Neopaganism (Odinism). Ron McVan, who collaborated with Gardell for his Gods of the Blood book, states that he had "once sworn an oath of brotherhood to me in my Viking hof." Gardell is partly blamed by McVan for accusations of plagiarism.[2]

Stockholm-based journalist Lisa Bjurwald (b. 1978) has recently published the critically acclaimed reportage book Europe's Shame, on the rise of Europe's far right.

Lisa Bjurwald's new book, Keyboard Warriors (Skrivbordskrigarna), is focused on the burning topic of Internet radicalisation and the far right online.

She is a columnist in Fokus, Sweden's news weekly, and Ny Tid, Norway's international news magazine.

Bjurwald, previously op-ed writer at leading Swedish dailies, has also published an investigative book on women in the extreme right (Good Day, Sister in Arms).

In 2010, she was the Swedish winner of the European Parliament Prize for Journalism (press category) and in 2009, a Milena Jesenská Journalism Fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna.

During 2006-2011, she was a member of the editorial board at the anti-racist Expo Magazine.

Bjurwald served as an expert on the Swedish government-appointed commission on how to combat xenophobia during 2011-12.

Magnus Alkarp: Writer and Historian. Read more

Magnus Alkarp, born March 31, 1959, is a Swedish musician, author, archaeologist and historian. His father was a jazz musician and organist (Catholic). Alkarp lives since 1980 in Uppsala, and in recent years also on the island of Tilos in Greece.

Alkarp a PhD in archeology and he took his doctorate in november 2009 in a historical research of Old Uppsala. As researchers are Alkarp specializes in problems relating to the ancient Uppsala's history and the transition period between the Viking Age and the Middle Ages.

Recently, Alkarp focused on issues related to Swedish humanities nationalist heritage and interest in the Nazi infiltration of Swedish archeology during 1933-1945.

Jesper Svartvik: Krister Stendahl Professor of Theology of Religions at Lund University. Read more

Born in 1965. In 2009 I was appointed the first Krister Stendahl Professor of Theology of Religions at the Centre for Theology and Religious Studies at Lund University and the Swedish Theological Institute in Jerusalem.

After undergraduate studies in Religious Studies at Lund University, He studied for two semesters in Jerusalem (Swedish Theological Institute and Hebrew University) and commenced his doctoral studies. In 2000 He defended his doctoral thesis which explored early Jewish-Christian relations. In Theology of Religions we study the relationships between various religions traditions. How do, e.g., Jews, Christians and Muslims look upon each other? How has it been in history, how is it now -- and how can it be improved in the future? In his work, He commute between Lund and Jerusalem as He is responsible for all the academic courses at the Swedish Theological Institute. He is a member of the Vetenskapssocieteten, one of the learned societies in Lund.

Ulrika Svalfors: Postdoctoral Fellow and Senior Lecturer in Systematic Theology and Studies in World Views.

Who gets the privilege to formulate spiritual matters? Have the opportunity to become spiritually mature anything with gender, class and ethnicity to do? These two questions followed Ulrika during her work with the thesis "The Order of Spirituality. A discursive reading of the magazine Pilgrim". In many ways has the relationship between spirituality and power continued to be a part of her research, even though the projects have shifted. Right now she is part of a larger interdisciplinary project focusing on high school students' attitudes and values of sustainable development. In this project she explore hermeneutics as an approach to interviews to disclose young peoples understanding of commitment and its existential dimensions.
